- Trendy 7" Choice Cuts EST21, 1981 PS
(Trendy / Georgetown Sucks / Video Disease / Punch Him In The Head / Limited
Nuclear War // Life Is A Joke / Vladimer / Boring / KKK-FM / No Messages)
Too early a release to be generic hardcore, but it lacks the fervor of
the best DC bands. Fast and simple with adenoidal vocals.[GMcN]

(Riot On The Rockers / It's Your Choice, But / Your Time Is Up / Extended Truth /
Inner Beirut Violence / Bo Bo // City Life / Meditteran)
Punky hardcore from a likeable band led by two Middle-Eastern brothers.
No songs to speak of, and the sound quality is pretty low, but both EPs
have a certain suburban panache.[GMcN]

The EPs are mostly forgettable farfisa-laden pop-rock, but some rather punk surprises
exist on the LP, especially Scared Straight and Fun In Nicaragua.[RE]

Trixy & The Testones Baltimore
- Palisades Park / Bits And Pieces 7" Toy T-001, 1978 PS
Punky covers of a couple 60s garage classics. There is some bizarre
instrumentation, besides the usual guitar/bass/drums -- glockenspiel,
synth, sax -- but it somehow works.[JF]

(Businessman's Bounce / Island's / Modern Boys / Where's The Action /
Surfer's Wipeout / Ride The Surf // Oh, Rape / Let's Glow / Really
Don't Know / You Seem To Me / Sophisticated / Craig's Friends Are
Congenial)
They played in Northeastern PA in the early 80s. They had a surf/punk
sound. I last heard Craig was the writer of the Inspector Gadget
theme but I'm not sure this is true.[Joe Coste] The LP is a strange,
varied pop/wave record, with a couple of inexplicable surf references,
as these guys were nowhere near the ocean. The best tracks are Modern Boys
(power pop) and if you like keyboards, Businessman's Bounce (hard-wave).
The single has a pretty solid powerpop number on the A-side which is hurt
somewhat by a slow breakdown in the middle of the song, backed with a
better sounding version of Islands, also a good powerpop track that made it
on to the LP. Web searches seem to indicate that he produced, not wrote,
the Inspector Gadget song.[JF]
The Blame Lancaster
- Elevator Shoes / Little Girls In Hollywood 7" ASP ASM725/6, 1981 NS?
Elevator Shoes is five minutes of lame whitey reggae with guitar solos.
B is decent tuff rock, 2:00 long, good 4 second guitar solo.[HW]
The Blame was from Lancaster, PA sometime between 1979 and 1982. The
only member of the band I can remember by name was "Guy Debris"
(pronounced GHEE DEBREE). I remember this only because I auditioned
to be their lead singer in 1981, but was deemed too "rock" for their
new-wave/post-2nd-invasion sensibilities.[Jonathan Lowry]

Dark-wave with hints of punk, loud guitars.[BM]
Dress Up As Natives Pittsburgh

Generic Beat Erie
- Don't Drop It On Me / Imagination Heart Attack 7" Generic Products/TMI
308069, 1983 PS
The A-side, which is marked as a "protest song" on the labels is good
melodic punk with female backing vocals. B-side is labeled a "pop song"
and isn't too hot. The earliest copies came with an insert only, replaced
soon thereafter by a proper picture sleeve once TMI Records got involved
in distributing it.[JF]
Ground Zero Pittsburgh
- Living In Tandem 7" Bung 211076, 1982 PS
(Controversy / TV Land // Living In Tandem / You Talk)
The first track on each side is a decent, upbeat punker. You Talk
is a bit artier. TV Land has the dreaded ska/Clash influence.[JF]
Horn & Hard Art Philadelphia
- Mister Mister / Black Beauty // I'm Not Nice / Falling Down Again 7"
Horn & Hard Art HHA-FW001, 1978 PS
Obscure diy rock, one track is gruff-vox punky stuff.[BD] I'm Not
Nice is the good track, and is very out-of-place, as the rest is
essentially funk.[JF]

Peens Erie
- Air To Breathe / I Just Want To Be Loved By You // Thrill Me / Dogs And

Thrill Me is ok powerpop/wave/punk. The rest of the EP is on the quirkier
side.[JF]

Victims is decent grind.[HW]
Sadistic Exploits Upper Darby (near Philadelphia)
- Freedom / Apathy 7" Freedom FREE1, 1981 PS
Sadistic Exploits were very much a hardcore band, but the A-side has a
serious PiL vibe. Excellent and great-sounding.[GMcN]
Story Of Failure Johnstown
- Negative Fulfillment On The 83 Spitting Circuit 7" Swill Radio 001, 1983 PS
(This Is Working / Harvard Bing-Bong // Beer / The Long Ride)
Harvard Bing-Bong is the best (only?) early Fall ripoff to come out of
the US. This Is Working is ok Fall-ish rockabilly too. Other side is
so-so pop.[HW]
Billy Synth Harrisburg
- State of Confusion 7" Tragik #1, 1981 PS
(Real Cool Time / I'm So Sick Of It / World War 9 / Jimmy Jones //

Billy Synth And The Janitors Harrisburg
- Rock N Roll Casualty 7" Cracked 14, 1978 PS
(Everytime You Give Me A Call / Rock N Roll Casualty // Captain Groovy /
Misty Lane Fadein/Fadeout...)
Everytime is good punky garage rock with some electronics interludes
that don't hurt the song. The other tracks are ok, but are in more of
a garage/psych/synth vein.[JF]
Billy Synth And The Turn Ups Harrisburg
- Off The Deep End LP Cracked 1, 1980
(Young Kidz On Drugs / Live And Die / Get Your Goddam Hands Off Me / I
Wanna Be Your Dog / Power Play / Surfin' USA / The Little Black Egg /
In The Land Of The Dinosaurs / Off The Deep End / Till The End Of The
Day / Fast / Low Class Boy / Rock N Roll Casualty / More Dinosaurs)
- Disorderly Conduct LP Tragik TRLP1, 1983

Is / My Addiction // Nobody's Boy / William / Walking Skeletons / Loud
And Boistrous / The Madison Shuffle / Pushin' Too Hard / Going All The
Way)
Billy is punkier overall on these two albums since he's being backed by the
Turn Ups, but the synths are really prominant on many tracks. His voice also
takes some getting used to. Note that about half the songs are 60s garage
rock covers.[JF]

- A Place In The Sun 7" Blood Bubble 1, 1983 PS
(Not Shit / 1983 / Friends / Mad At The World / Out For Blood //
Categorized / Another Day / Get Up And Fight/Zombie Youth / Why Die)
Rough, snaggletoothed, violently depressive hardcore that's surprisingly
nuanced despite its thuggish aesthetic and sheer force of impact.
Ultra-heavy and clear despite cheap production.[GMcN]
Various - Get Off My Back LP Red Music PHC004, 1983

Sources - Right + Wrong, Dense Pack / Seeds of Terror - Brain Down,

Great Adventure, My Twin From Hell (Who Was That Guy))
The Philly version of Flex Your Head, featuring most of the bands
(although not all) that mattered at the moment. Primo stuff, with most
tracks unavailable elsewhere. FOD is among the most manic hardcore bands
ever hatched; Ruin were smart, heavy, and moderately art-damaged; McRad
was skate-core with a Two-Tone influence; the Heathens were no-wave
fellow-travellers.[GMcN]

Barriers NR11268, 1979 PS
Excellent garage/punk, similar to the Crucified to a certain extent.[MT]
Interesting mix of punk and straight rock sounds. First three tracks are
good, while Girls on the Beach is an extended instrumental jam.[JF]

speed and chops.[GMcN]

Pay To Cum = an American punk rock classic. Black Dots is great 1979 demos. The self titled

All great stuff and you can always wash it down with a refreshing blast of Blow Me Jah.[HW]

- America's Youth / Crimes Of Passion 7" 007 Records 21, 2000/1980 NS
Classic American punk records from a band that started early and
recorded late - the band that all the original DC Hardcore kids used to
save their lunch money to go see. The single has power, chops, and
tunes; the LP is more anthemic and raucous, with crisper sound.
Tremendous stuff.[GMcN] The America's Youth single is a reissue of
a test pressing. The Dr. Strange reissue of the first single adds two
live tracks from 1984 to the flip.[JF]

Double O
- You've Lost / Is It Better / Grey To Black // Death Of A Friend / There's No

Good hardcore with a progressive edge (including the once-shocking
presence of synthesizers).[GMcN]
Faith
- Faith/Void split LP Dischord 8, 1982
(It's Time / Face To Face / Trapped / In Control / Another Victim / What's Wrong

In The Black // b-side by Void)
- Subject To Change 12" Dischord 11, 1983
(Aware / Say No More / Limitations / No Choice // Untitled / Subject To Change /
More Of The Same / Slowdown)
The Faith was ultimately more the prototypical DC hardcore band than
even Minor Threat: Subject To Change is a foundational text of
emo-core - fast and blaring, but with a dramatic, declamatory aesthetic
and a lyrical bent toward the personal. The Faith/Void split LP is
drabber, but still good. Void's side has awful sound, and the band can't
play - but it's a frighteningly great piece of ear-damage.[GMcN]
Government Issue
- Legless Bull 7" Dischord 4, 1981 PS
(Religious Rip Off / Fashionite / Rock & Roll Bullshit / Anarchy Is Dead / Sheer

- Make An Effort 7" Fountain Of Youth 4, 1982 PS
(Teenager In A Box / No Way Out // Twisted Views / Sheer Terror)
- Boycott Stabb 12" Dischord 10 3/4 / Fountain Of Youth 2, 1983
(Hall Of Fame / Hour Of 1 / G.I. / Puppet On A String / Sheer Terror // Happy
People / Lost In Limbo / Plain To See / Partyline / Here's The Rope / Insomniac)
The first EP is ace medium-tempo hardcore, sloppy around the edges but
full of great songs and instrumental stylings. Sound quality is at the
low end of the scale. The second EP continues along the same lines, but
with better sound. Boycott Stabb is so powerful and tight it leaves
exit wounds.[GMcN]
Graphic Shadows
- She Turns Her Eyes Away / I Only Did It To Make You Mad // SBS / Red, White And Blue
7" Explicit EXP-001, 1981 PS
The 7" is above average punk/wave that I personally like a lot. Sadly it,
as so often is the case, went downhill from there. The group released
a full length LP in 1984 that showcases the band as an electronic pop duo.
Since their drummer left, they feature drum machines on all the tracks,
and... well let's just say the album is pretty bad.[Scott Bass]
Iron Cross

(Crucified For Our Sins / Psycho Skin / Fight 'em All // Shadows)
- Hated & Proud 7" Skinflint 2, 1983 PS
(You're A Rebel / Grey Morning // Wolf Pack)
Anthemic skinhead stuff - terrible playing, slipshod production, great
songs. Crucified is among the most covered songs in all of hardcore.
Iron Cross always had identity problems, such that the second 7" shows
singer Sab Grey copycatting the sardonic sing-song style of Government
Issue's John Stabb. It works.[GMcN]

- It's No Fun To Be A Dead Rock'n'Roll Star (Or Death Under Contract) /
Disco Clones 7" MTL 008024, 1980 PS
Band describes self as "psyco-sexual acid punk neo-glitter wave rock",
and proudly proclaims "no guitars, no keyboards". I say "no good" due
to electric violin leads and annoyingly overwrought female vocals.[JF]
Minor Threat
- Filler 7" Dischord 3, 1981 PS
(Filler / I Don't Wanna Hear It / Seeing Red / Straight Edge /
Small Man/Big Mouth / Screaming At A Wall / Bottled Violence /

No Trend Ashton MD
- Mass Sterilization Caused By Venereal Disease / Cancer // Teen Love 7"
No Trend 10-3-7SH-3908, 1983 PS
- Too Many Humans 12" No Trend 002, 1983
Perhaps the most hated band on the DC hardcore scene, No Trend played
slow, sloppy, and interminably -- like Flipper, but with less utter
cacophony and more screaming. Both records are, regardless, great and
interesting, and show that the band knew just what they were doing.[GMcN]
Nurses
- Hearts / Cardiac Arrest 7" Round Raoul 7-45-05, 1979 PS
Limp 034, 1981 NS
- I Will Follow You / Love You Again 7" Teen-A-Toons TAT-1, 1980 PS
- Running Around / Tina's Smile 7" Limp 011, 1981 HS
- DYF / Bad Mood 7" Dacoit 008, 1983 PS
- Extant 5x7" boxed set Dacoit 009, 1983
The Limp Records pressing of the first single was a remastered version,
but never made it past the test pressing stage. It is listed here because
a good number of them were made. Running Around exists only as a test
pressing or plain white label, many intended for the boxed set, but some
in a picture sleeve. The Extant box contains sleeveless copies of all the
above plus the Reind Dears 45. It has the test pressing of the Limp version
of the first single. All singles are stamped or stickered with "BOX 009".[JF]
Reind Dears
- Xmas Is Going To Bring Me / White Christmas 7" Limp 013, 1978 PS
Scream
- Still Screaming LP Dischord 9, 1982

Of Her Time / Human Behavior / Stand / Fight/American Justice // New
Song / Laissez-Faire / Influenced / Hygiene / Cry Wolf / Total Mash /
Who Knows-Who Cares? / Amerarockers / U. Suck A./We're Fed Up)
Tremendous, anthemic hardcore with plenty of hooks and more than a bit
of a Clash influence. Clear and powerful sound - a classic. [GMcN]
Shirkers
- Drunk & Disorderly / Suicide 7" Limp 003, 1978 PS
Limp 666 / Dacoit 999, 2008 PS

SOA
- No Policy 7" Dischord 2, 1981 PS
(Lost In Space / Draw Blank / Girl Problems / Black Out / Gate Crashers //
War Zone / Riot / Gang Fight / Public Defender / Gonna Have To Fight)
Chugging, tunka-tunka hardcore with Henry Rollins on vocals.
Meat-and-potatoes stuff, and among the best of its kind.[GMcN]
Teen Idles
- Minor Disturbance 7" Dischord 1, 1981 PS
(Teen Idles / Sneakers / Get Up And Go / Deadhead // Fleeting Fury /
Fiorucci Nightmare / Getting In My Way / Too Young To Rock)
- Teen Idles 7" Dischord DIS100V, 1996/1980
(Adventure / Teen Idles / Sneakers // Trans Am /
Fiorucci Nightmare/Getting In My Way)
Minor Disturbance is the first real hardcore record (everything like
it before was just sped-up punk). A charging teenage shambles that
would become focused when Minor Threat emerged from the rubble of
the band. By the time this EP was out, that had already happened:
Minor Disturbance is posthumous. Great songs; inept but spirited
playing; dodgy sound quality.[GMcN]
Tina Peel

(Up In The Air / Love Love Love / The Problem Is Me / Betsy's Dressed

Quirky f-vox punk-wave. Quite good if you're a fan of the style.[JF]
