Hardcore from Amherst: manic, nuanced, and outstanding. Deep Wound was
(oddly in retrospect) the jump-off band for slack ironists J. Mascis
(Dinosaur Jr.) and Lou Barlow (Sebadoh). Mascis plays drums here,
except for a stray guitar solo.[GM]

- Brotherhood 12" X-Claim 4, 1983
(Open Up / More Than Fashion / Circle Storm / City To City / (The
Girl's Got) Limits // Brotherhood / Yellow / Stand Proud / Insurance
Risk / Escape)
Boston city-kid hardcore, a surprising blend of fervency and
production. Sounds like it was recorded by lab-coated sound engineers
at an early-60s RKO studio, strange and somewhat wrong-sounding, but
its power is undeniable. D.Y.S. were the big shit in Boston for awhile,
but never out of town. This 12" rips; the following LP, like a lot of
later Boston efforts, was uninspired metal.[GM]
Eighth Route Army
- Think For Yourself / Vice Presidente / Professional Killer 7"
One Dimensional UR3801, 1982 PS
British punk circa '80, transposed onto an '82-era Boston band with
ambitions. It seems as though the crowd failed them, and not the other
way around.[GM]

Fragile And The Eggs
- If You See Kay / If You See Kay (Long Version) 7" Long View LV 8010, 1980 PS
Power pop with these chord progressions that go down instead of
up giving it a dark sound. They were not punk in the
KBD sense but definitely power pop with a punk darkness.[SS]
Freeze Boston
- I Hate Tourists / Don't Forget Me Tommy 7" Rebel 809-21, 1980 HS
- Violent Arrest / Voices From My Window // Halloween Night / Guilty Face 7"
Modern Method MM018, 1983
The first single is lame-o Farfisa punk, justified by the band's Cape
Cod provincialism. The Guilty Face ep great punky hardcore.[GM] Presumably
Gavin's talking about the flipside because I hear no farfisa on the
great I Hate Tourists which has just about everything you'd want in a
punk rock song - bad attitude, amateur solos, great vocals. The punks are
divided on Don't Forget Me Tommy - there's a great song there despite the
instrumentation and (humourous) attempts at reggae rhythms, I guess it's
mainly carried by the vocal melody and the vocals themselves.[HW]
F.U.'s

(Civil Defense / Me Generation / Daisy Chain / Peer Police / Rock And
Roll Mutha / T Sux // Trendy Nazi Hypocrites / Die For God / F.U.)
- My America LP X-Claim 5, 1983
(What You Pay For / Outcast / Poor, Poor, Pitiful You / The Grinder /
Unite Or Lose // This Is Your Life / My America / Choir Boy / Boston's
Finest / Rifle / We're An American Band)
A bunch of Boston yo-yos who started as a sucky hardcore band, and
turned into a ferocious one. Kill For Christ is fairly primitive and
thin-sounding, while My America is a giant wall of sound. Radiobeat
Studios, and its house engineer, Lou Giordano, made Boston hardcore
bands sound incredibly big on record (he did almost all the X-Claim
releases). Live, the FUs were merely really good. The band's swaggering
Archie Bunker politics seemed threatening once, but now just seem like
young guys making goofy Rambo-faces.[GM]

Jerry's Kids
- Is This My World? LP X-Claim 6, 1983
(I Don't Belong / Cracks In The Wall / Tear It Up / Crucify Me / Break
The Mold / Raise The Curtain // Vietnam Syndrome / Build Me A Bomb /
New World / Lost / No Time / Is This My World?)
This is what Jerry's Kids was like: You were in a band in 1983, in
Connecticut or upstate New York or somewhere. You practiced a lot, and
kids came to your shows in basements and VFW halls, and you printed up
T-shirts and stickers and all that. You thought you were pretty good.
Then, one day, Jerry's Kids came around, and you went to see them. And
when they hit the stage in an amphetaminized fury, airborne and flailing
and sounding like a cataclysmic explosion, you were suddenly two
inches tall.
There was an ad for a re-release of this record in the early '90s
whose headline went, 'Time for some REAL hardcore." And it does, in
fact, make the modern stuff sound awfully weak and lifeless. The
tempos here aren't really that fast (although the manic performances
make it seem as though they are), and the songs are good and catchy
without yielding up any real classics. But this is weapons-grade
stuff, loud at any volume and a good indicator of what this utterly
crazed band was like onstage.[GM]

Kill Me Now // Better Off Dead / Not Today / Black / Let Me Sleep / I
Don't Know Right From Wrong / Don't Wanna Die... / Color Scheme / Hold
On To Love / Please Love Sex)
Happy to review any of the La Peste stuff though the tenor of any
La Peste write-up is always pre-ordained: no matter how good the
material, there's only one Better off Dead! There's a La Peste cassette
that floated around Boston once upon a time. Sound quality varied
(and has degraded somewhat), and most of the songs got picked for the
Matador LP, but not all. Songs on the CS were: Whites Of Your Eyes / Don't
Know Right From Wrong / Lying In The Sun / After Dinner Crimes / Spymaster
/ In The Army Now / Truth / Whirlpool / Dick Tracy / Road / Not Today
/ Pop Rock Polls / Let Me Sleep / She's A Girl / Die In My Sleep /
T.K.O. / Too Many Nights / T.N.T. [AC/DC!] / Kill Me Now / Leave Me Alone
/ Acid Test / Better Off Dead. The song titles on the live LP were mangled
too - the correct tracklist is above.[Michael Train]
Last Rights
- Chunks / So Ends Our Night 7" Taang! 2, 1984 PS
American Oi! with nice hooks. Last Rights was an intermediate project
between early Boston hardcore legends Negative FX, and the latter-day
band, Slapshot. Several sleeves and colors of vinyl exist for the
single.[GM]

- Lou & The Kozmetix LP Modern Method MM019, 1982
(Italian Movie / Women In A Western Bar / Dance With Death // New
Romantix / Vehicle For Love / Monster Mash)
The single is an underappreciated record, Fascist Lover is KBD level.[HW]
The first song on each side of the LP is a decent, upbeat number, but
the rest is forgettable, and nothing reaches the level of the single.[JF]

This Is Boston Not LA LP Modern Method MM012, 1982
(Jerry's Kids - Straight Jacket / Uncontrollable / Wired / Desperate /
Pressure / I Don't Wanna / Proletariat - Options / Religion Is The Opium

Bomb / Boston Not L.A.)
The Gang Green tracks are the loudest, hardest, fastest, most unintelligible
music I've ever heard. Great stuff! Jerry's Kids are up there on the
loud-fast-hard scale, too, but the lead singer is usually understandable.[TW]

0491 Zoo Types - Some Kids Never Grow Up / Welcome To The 80s 7" (1979)
The Zoo Types record is oddly no affiliation whatsoever with Worcester's
Beast label. (Plus, it's bad DIY hippie-psych.) Apparently there was no
Beast 3, maybe an aborted project.[JL]

the final digit the year (example: DTY-8113S is November, 1983). The letter at the end
signifies single or EP.[JF]

There is no catalog number anywhere on the Uncommitted 7" (matrix is 26-A/26-B), but it
is referred to as 003 on the insert to the Wicked Good Time Volume 2 LP. The record was
probably self-released by the band with the label name and catalog number lent to make
the release more legit.[MB]
