IOWA
Dogs Decorah
- Rot`n'Roll / Teen Slime 7" Rave-Up RU-101, 1977 PS
- Teen Slime LP IT Rave Up 0004, 1999/1973,1977
(Teen Slime / X-Ray Me, Baby / When A Young Man // Rot'n'Roll / Man
Is Not An Animal / Horror House Blues / Freakin' On The Street)
LP is both sides of the 7" plus prev. unrel. stuff, I was expecting
some huge riffing to go on but didn't really get it. Two of the
tracks on side 2 are decent, whole thing is kinda short.[HW]
Jody Koenig Decorah
- In The Market / James Dean 7" Rave RU-102, 1981 PS
- Passion Creek LP Rave, 1981
(If I Walked For Miles / Cali / Lonely Heart / Chains On The Bible /
My Mistake // She's The Girl / Love Letter, Talk / Don't Live Inside
Yourself / Memories Play Tricks On My Mind / Sad in Love/Zen)
Dogs singer solo. The single (A-side, at least) is above-average
powerpop/wave. I haven't heard the LP, but it does not look promising.[JF]
Law Des Moines
- King Size Cigarette / Hole In My Heart // Satellite Rock / Reason For
Treason 7" Fly Girl WAL0891, 1980 PS
Luxury Des Moines
- Green Hearts / One In A Million 7" Angry Young AYR 2479, 1979 PS
Nice power-pop. A-side has some very cool stripped-down punkish
song structures, B-side uses a couple of extra chords and has some
prominent keyboards.[HM]

- Bringing Down The Big Boys 7" Fatman 504023, 1985
(Rock Stars / Service With A Smile / I Hate MTV // Cancer Of Hypocrisy /

Excellent, hilarious punk/hardcore. Despite their release date they sneak
in 'cos I like 'em.[HW]
Babylon Dance Band
- When I'm Home / Remains Of The Beat 7" Babylon Dance Band BDB001, 1981 PS
Blinders Louisville
- Last Chance EP 7" Warped 49885/6, 1979 PS

- Prehistory LP Enigma/Index, 1983
FR Invitation Au Suicide, 1985
(Current / Prehistory Part 1 / Prehistory Part II / Culture Progress /
Underworld / Beyond Standard)
- Live In Dijon '79 10" FR Fractal 700, 2008/1979
Formed in Kentucky, but they quickly moved to NYC, so perhaps more accurately
a New York band. They also spent time in '79-'80 based in Dijon, France. The
first single was a giveaway with a festival catalog published by the German
art magazine Shvantz.[JF]
Endtables Louisville
- Process Of Elimination / The Defectors // They're Guilty / Circumcision 7"
Tuesday 40983/4, 1979 HS
- White Glove Test / Trick Or Treat 7" Self Destruct SD10, 1991/1979 PS
- Endtables LP Drag City DC426, 2010/1979
(Process Of Elimination / The Defectors / They're Guilty // Circumcision /
White Glove Test / Trick Or Treat)
Ignore the White Glove Test 7" at your peril, these two tracks are as fine
as any punk-with-a-tinge-of-art released anywhere anytime.[HW]
Happy Cadavers
- With Illustrations 7" Undefined, 1982
(Nothing New / I Saw My Baby In The Meat Section / Images / Rigor Mortis)
Red Interiors Lexington
- St. Joe's / Collapse Of The Middle Class // Who Cares About You? 7" D.A.
BP-324, 1981 PS
Hard edged new wave. Who Cares has great angst.[BC] Arty overall and
downright weird in places. Who Cares is the most normal and best of the
tracks. Unfortunately the synths and especially the saxophone are obtrusive
on most of the record. Still, it's well worth owning for fans of the genre.[JF]
Snare & The Idiots Newport
- Recycled Garbage 7" Slopfactor, 1985 PS
(Political Song / Pimples // It's A Freak Show / Zero Worship)
Various - A Fashionable Collection 7" Hit-A-Note NR12236, 1981? PS
(Blinders - It's Understood / Intentions - Little One // Frosties - Since
I Met You / Jil Thorp And The Beat Boys - Carbon Shuffle)
Frosties is decent power-pop with some synth. The Blinders track is weak
compared to other things I've heard from them.[JF]
Various - Compilation Album LP Splat! HP1040, 1985
(Active Ingredients - Gettin' Healthy For The Holocaust / Ministry of
Truth (M.O.T.) - Nothin' But Time / + 8 non-punk bands)
Ministry of Truth is uninteresting hardcore.[JF]
Various - New Accounts 7" Hit-A-Note NR12336, 1981 PS
(Strict-9 - Rock In The Suburbs / Melusian - Let The Rain (Disperse) //
Babylon Dance Band - My Friend Roger / Untouchables - Real Cool Mover)
Strict-9 and Babylon Dance Band are the winners here. Overall a much better comp
than A Fashionable Collection, above.[JF]

MISSOURI
Brown And Langrehr St. Louis
- I Remember / Crazy Days 7" B And L 18823, 1980 PS
Quirky powerpop/wave. Saved by its simplicity and vocals recorded way
in the red. See also Langrehr below.[JF]
Dear John St. Louis
- Frustrated Conversation / I Don't Want Her To Know 7" A.K.A. TS-81-576/577, 1981 PS
BDR 5, 2011 PS
A-side is good garage pop that sounds like the Champaign bands of that era.[BD]
Too wimpy for my tastes, but I hear the obvious appeal for powerpop fans. The
reissue is original 1981 vinyl in a new picture sleeve.[JF]
Dinosaurs St. Louis
- It Might Be Rose / Rock 'n Roll Moron 7" Dinosaurs, 1979 PS
Fair artpunk.[CW] Heavily Velvet Underground influenced. A-side is slower tempo
with prominant fuzz guitar. The flip is more glammy and a winner if you go for
those kinds of sounds.[JF]
Fools Face Springfield
- Here to Observe LP Bar-Co SO-16230, 1979
(All That I Want / Before The Shooting Started / Here to Observe / Cocaine Vs. The
Neutron Bomb (Keep It Clean) / Living My Life // Something About The Rain / Doubt It /
Nervous Wreck / I Don't Want To Hear It / Ugly)
Except for a reggae dud, side 2 is very nearly punk; the rest is pop-rock.[RE]
More records through the early-80s which are popular with power pop fans but
pretty wimpy to these ears.[JF]
Langrehr St. Louis
- What Is It Like? / New St. Louis Blues 7" Decision, 1982 PS
Quirky midwestern artpunk.[GB]
Perhaps more wave than artpunk. Also released an LP called Nervous Brain in 1985.
See also Brown And Langrehr above.[JF]
Max Load St. Louis
- Magazine Sex / X-Rod 7" 198X SR-ML-12779, 1979 RS
Max Load could be considered from Illinois. The address on the sleeve has them
across the river (in Illinois) but for all intents and purposes, St. Louis.[SE]
Mayhem
- You Get What You Pay For - No Filler Added 7" Mayhem Music Inc. 19811, 1981 PS
(Crazy Lady / You Say/I Say)
Both sides heavily Stooges/MC5/Dictators influenced[Erik Meinen]
Totally inaccurate description.[BD]
Not punk, but is punky hard rock. Not bad for what it is. Probably very
interesting to collectors of that genre.[JF]
Philosophic Collage St. Louis
- Genius / Planned Obsolescence // Toxic Poppies / Headline Deadline 7"
American Aesthetic Industries TS81-341/342, 1981 PS
BDR #7, 2012 PS
Good art/wave/punk.[BD]
Screamin' Mee-Mees St. Louis

Bag Of Hammers U-40823M, 1995? PS
(Hot Sody / Struck Out // Pigs / Max Factor)
- Home Movies 7" Bag Of Hammers U-42582, 1995/1978 PS
(Goin' For Grease / Too Young To Shave // Green Cigars From Mars /
Vacation)
Strikers St. Louis
- No Reason / Original Crowd // Knock It Down / Running On Air 7"
Simplex EOM80-004, 1980 PS
Not too bad, sorta punky ska rock.[SE]
White Pride St. Louis
- Peace My Ass 7" Orp 11, 1989/3 PS
(Fuck You / White Pride / Illegal Aliens // There Goes The Neighborhood
/ Domino Theory)
Jim Wunderle Springfield
- Pushin' Too Hard / Hunter Gets Captured By The Game // Almost Grown /
Something You Got 7" Ayatollah 001, 1979 PS
The opening track is a good, but straight-forward cover of the Seeds'
classic. The other 3 songs have no punk elements.[JF]
Various - Test Patterns LP Hi-Test HIT5981, 1981
(Felons - Love 'N' Skank / Zanti Misfits - Holier Than Thou / Trained
Animal - U.R.A. Girl / Mopeds - Woe Is Me / Oozkicks - Unknown / Swift
Kick - Blushin' Russian Girl / Strikers - Kick Around // Oozkicks - I'm
So Young / Swift Kick - Unpredictable / Mopeds - She's A Mongrel /
Strikers - Knock It Down / Felons - Dancing School / Zanti Misfits -
Bachelor's Friend / Trained Animal - When You Dance With Me)
Not too hot. The Strikers tracks are the best IMHO.[SE]
NEBRASKA
A.K.A.
- Two Territories // Sharp / Mark Of Cain 7" 36856, 1980 PS
Better Beatles Omaha
- I'm Down / Penny Lane 7" Woodgrain WG-711 1982 NS
- Mercy Beat LP Hook Or Crook HOOK 012 2007/1982
It's great (I'd compare it to UK's the Normal doing Beatles covers).[MG]
Boat People Grand Island
- Capitalist / John Dillinger (Died For You) 7" Stamp & Go SG-7-1, 1983 HS/SS
Bump Fuzz / Calypso Machinegun
- Savage Connection / A Hole Is A Hole // Lobotomy / Psychic Turmoil split 7"
Talking Mule TM4374, 1982 SS
BF are sucky/dumb new wave, but C.M. are interesting art/no
wave with female vox. Definitely worth mentioning.[MG]
The stamped sleeve is just the label's name/address/phone.

TENNESSEE
Cloverbottom Nashville
- Anarchy In Music City 7" Toolbox CB-0001, 1980 PS
(Anarchy In Music City / Life Is A Game // Cottage Cheeseheads / Nuclear War)
Pretty great (fake?) punk / hardrock hybrid. All four tracks are worthwhile.[JF]
Crime Memphis
- I.C.U. / Do The Pogo 7" 1981 NS
A-side is excellent powerpop.[BD]
Körö Knoxville
- 700 Club / Selfless / It's OK / Government // Dear Sirs / Blap! / Nauseous /
Acid Casualty 7" No Label, 1983 PS
NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) Summertown
- We Are The NRC / Critical Mass // Inspection +? 7" Radioactive NR 11598, 1980 PS
- Reactor LP Official OR1180, 1980

Sugar // Fax / Generator / Drafted / Z-Bomb)
- Sally's All Alone (After The End) / Disposable Sponges // Lazy Boys 7" Official OR982, 1982 PS
LP is pretty awful, one or two passable cheesewave moments if that's your thing.[HW]
Ratz Madison
- Call It Quitz / Mental Block 7" Rotating RZ-102, 1980 PS
Scruffs Memphis
- Break The Ice / She Say Yea 7" Power Play 1955, 1977 PS

- Shakin / Teenage Girls 7" Power Play 1957, 1978 NS?
- Teenage Girls / Shakin 7" DE Line 1005, 1979 PS
- When Donna Romances / Rock 'n' Roll Heads 7" Sounds Interesting 006, 1980 PS
Well-regarded powerpop band, but there's not much punk influence. The single
version of Break The Ice is punky and nicely underproduced. Shakin is also good.
On the album, I've Got A Way is the most aggressive, and clocks in under two
minutes, but even it's really glammy and has some piano.[JF]
Sgt Arms Nashville
- Walking On The Roof / Caught In Traffic 7" Active Duty 11, 1982 PS
Powerpop, way too smooth for my tastes.[HW]
STD Knoxville
- Another Dead Asshole 7" Horace NR-15541, 1984 PS
(Another Dead Asshole / Businessmans Lunch / Surf And Kill // The Operation /
Folsom Prison Blues / Skateboards Suck)
Really tough punk/metalcore, not bad, but they ain't Koro.[CR]
Can't say I hear much metal in it. Businessmans Lunch is the most straight
punk of the bunch and best in my opinion. I don't care for the rest (Johnny
Cash covers are always a bad idea) but appreciate they're not doing the
'how fast can we play?' style of hardcore.[JF]
Various - Never In Nashville 7" Praxis 002, 1981 PS
(Factual - Wound In Time / No Art - English Boys // USR - We The People /
Cloverbottom - Battery)
