- Bringing Down The House / Going Down To Town 7" Happy Squid HS009, 1982 PS
Unlike the 90s incarnation, their earlier material takes much of its
sound from 60s influences like the Doors, which can be found in both
the keyboards and vocals though this band sounds more wild and unpolished.
Bringing Down The House is a great track.[Brian GTA]

This City of Orange group utilize a basic mid-paced thrash approach
on their 7", good but simple. On the LP you can hear that they have
greatly progressed in musicianship and songwriting skills and the
songs take on a more melodic OC sound a la Adolescents.[Brian GTA]

M
- Espionage Baby // You've Been Had / Fast Food Suburbanite 7" Flipside
FS-M-00001, 1978 HS
First and last track are totally stripped-down garage-punk with surfy
guitar. You've Been Had is a novelty throwaway with a ska beat. This is
a typically noisy Moxie Records pressing with matrix M-1022, as also
indicated on the labels. The Moxie catalog number is what dates it to
1978.[JF]
Mad Society
- Riot Squad / Skitz // Napalm / Termanally Ill / Little Devil 7"

Basic early mid-paced hardcore punk with eight year old Stevie

other release of that time period.[Brian GTA]

Means Downey
- Means Of Communication LP Spurious SP-1, 1981
(Talk It Over / Russian Roulette / Love's Too Bad / Roommate /

Roommate is silly uptempo synthpunk with Clash-influenced fake
Brit vocals. The rest of the record is uninteresting new wave.[JF]
Mechanics Los Angeles
- No Brakes / Drivin' Me Away 7" Chateau East, 1981 PS
Hard rock punk crossovers from late 70s Fullerton. Guitarist
Tim's lead playing style would be copped by fellow locals the
Adolescents, whom the Mechanics heavily influenced.[Brian GTA]
Mel
- Block Walk Rock / Modest Living 7" A Record Co. ARC1301, 1983 PS
Modest Living is a solid punk tune - great PS that folds out into a

- Homeland LP Pulse PR123, 1982
(The Call / A Skeleton At The Feast / Out Of My Hands / Listen // Shaken
/ Mosque / Restless Young Men / Ritual And Deceit / Everything)
Out Of Vogue is without a doubt the first hardcore record released with its
then unheard of pace, wall of powerchords and yelled auctioneer style
vocals. Awesome. Scavenged Luxury is somewhere between the hardcore band
they started out as and the more rhythmic bass led group they were to become.
By the LP, with all indications that they were once a hardcore band gone, the new
material was more centered around the either semi-funkish or psuedo-Middle
Eastern rhythmic bass lines and drum interplay with the guitars coming up a
bit secondary. The production is rather clean on this recording which is a
slight detractor considering how powerful this material was live. I still
like this record a lot and if forced to draw a parallel between this and
another group I'd say early to mid Gang Of Four.[Brian GTA]

Afternoon - My Garden / Painted Dragon / Feel Real / Poem / Not What You Think)
This group shared members with Anti as well as their peace punk
philosophies though this band came off slightly more on the hippy
side of things. Lead vocalist Hatha's mother used to hang with
the hippies who co-inhabited Black Flag's old Church space.
The vocals tend to be more sung as opposed to screamed and at
times the band could be heard delving off their more straight
forward punk path into artier territory.[Brian GTA]

- #2 7" Bemis Brain BB21/22, 1981 PS
(Nothing's Left For Me // No Passion / Suburban Death Row)
On the first 7" the band starts off on the more punk side of
things with a somewhat thin and junky though original guitar
sound. By the second 7" they have become much more fierce,
moving towards hardcore with a quicker pace, heavier guitars
and more aggressive vocals. Both 7"s have really good
societally discontented lyrics and while I like both I would
pick the second as my favourite. There are two different
sleeves for the second 7", one is the old Krishna drawing of a
man with an animal face slaughtering an animal with a man's
face that Antidote also used for their 7" and the other sleeve
is simply the lyrics printed without any graphics.[Brian GTA]

- Nuclear Family / Punk In Paradise 7" Rockin' Room RR100, 1979 PS
A-side is f-vox new wave. Flip adds male backing vocals and some
aggression, but the punkest thing about it might be the word
"Punk" in the song title. Not recommended.[JF]

No Crisis
- She's Into The Scene 12" Ultra Mega UM86, 1982
(She's Into The Scene / Take It / About Face // Change
Your Name / Damnation / On Your Head)
Somewhere between the more melodic early Huntington Beach punk
sound and the then emerging amelodic hardcore. The title track
really shines as the most catchy track on here but the rest
of the record warrants repeat listens as well.[Brian GTA]

- White House Stooge / The Attack Of The Aliens 7" ROA-101, 1976? NS?
- Sensitive Man / Queen Of The Night 7" Awful Splendor SOW101, 1980/1978 PS
Queen Of The Night is a psychotic experience, about as messed up as anything you
want to match up against it.[BD] Not punk, but the second single is a really
cool record regardless. It has both a stamped innersleeve and slightly oversized
picture sleeve. The first single is billed as Peter and Mary Savinggrace and is
more dirge-y and less interesting to my ears. White House Stooge references
Nixon and Watergate, so the first single could be as early as '73-'74. The band
may have started out in San Francisco.[JF]

The 7" is definitely harder and more urgent, while the LP is slightly
more polished, exhibiting some minor 60s pop influences though remaining
totally within the punk genre. One thing that set this group apart was
that the vocalist could actually sing, which is exhibited far more on
the LP than 7".[Brian GTA]

Sloppy, wild, Velvet Underground unprofessionalism meets So California
beach punk abandon with an occasional hint of pop culture bubblegum.
Born Innocent definitely mines more of their 60s influences even going
so far as to include a Charles Manson cover, Cease To Exist, while the
Posh Boy 12" is more on the beach punk side of things.[Brian GTA]

(Kiss Ass / Violence / Government Science Fiction / God Of God / Timebomb
Scientific Race - Perfect World // Mission Of Mercy / Satan's Son /

On Acts Of Defiance we are treated to a band still exhibiting many of
their former rock influences and while the band would never completely
lose those influences it is not the fast raging hardcore with wild out
of control guitar leads displayed on the Fall In LP. Weight Of The
World pre-dates Fall In and is not quite as powerful though still a cool
record and the song tempos vary more between slower parts and mid to
fast hardcore.[Brian GTA]

A group some credit as being a precursor to early hardcore on the 7" though
they exhibited a quirkier guitar edge a la Minutemen later on.[Brian GTA]

(Atomic Lawn // Meat House / I Got Power)
On the first single we find two fuzzy guitar driven punk tracks this
San Gabriel Valley native had also performed with Negative Trend.
Soul Power off the second 7", though more rock`n'roll is the most
memorable track he ever recorded and the best of the bunch in my
opinion though '77 purists might like the first 7" better.[Brian GTA]
The Atomic Lawn EP reissues the first single with a solid track on the
A-side which sounds like a outtake from that same session.[JF]

bootleg, 2001 PS
- We Were That Noise / Gone For Good 7" Downtown 502, 1978 PS
The boot of the first single is pretty convincing, but it has a 2-color label
(black/silver) instead of the original's 3-color (black/silver/white) label.[JF]
Silver Chalice
- Wasted / Hot Tears 7" Final Gear DST000, 1979 HS
Simpletones Covina
- Dead Meat / Kirsty Q 7" Posh Boy PBS2, 1978 NR
- California / I Like Drugs 7" Posh Boy PBS3, 1979 PS
- Kirsty Q / Dead Meat (Killer Smog) 7" Posh Boy PBS2, 1990 PS
Poppy teenie bopper sounding punk made by some not so wholesome
characters. Vocalist Snickers (RIP) later went on to sing for
the Klan from Huntington Beach.[Brian GTA] Dead Meat never
released in 1978 but made the Posh Boy reissue series in 1990.

Spoilers Isla Vista
- Has Been / Battling On // Ugly Nancies / Boys Night Out 7" White Lunch, 1978 PS
- Greta Don't Come / Loose Words 7" White Lunch WLG/WLLW, 1980 PS
Secord single is new wave / powerpop, with absolutely no punk edge. I haven't
heard the first one.[JF]
Spys Montecito
- Midnight Riders / Plastered In Paris // I Don't Need Your Love / Lies 7"
Black Market 007, 1978 PS
Stains East Los Angeles
- Stains LP SST 010, 1983
(Sick And Crazy / Violent Children / Gang-Related Death / Get Revenge /
Germany / Political Scandal // Pretty Girls / Nowhere / Quit The Human Race
/ I'm Normal / Young Nazis)
Thick slashing metal damaged guitars and throaty vocals a la Dez era
Black Flag, though these guys were contemporaries not copyists.
Had the release of this record not been delayed then who knows
how much further these crazies would have gone.[Brian GTA]
Standbys San Diego
- Standby / Wasn't He Happy? // Withdraw / America Is Waiting 7" World WEP1001,

Out For Blood // Go Tell It On The Wall / Rub It In / All the Kids On
The Street / Don't Kill The Beat / To Sir With Love)
- Guardian Angels / American Nights 7" Posh Boy 8, 1981 PS
LP is lame.[HW]
Stingers Venice
- Blind / No Value 7" Stingers ARM8016/L-2385, 1980 PS
Artpunk. Blind is pretty good.[JF]
Straight A's
- Valley Dudes / Valley Dudes 7" SCR 101551, 1982 PS
A real band from the San Fernando Valley formed this band to combat
the anti-Valley sentiment in most punk circles. The song is kind of
a joke about Valley Dudes (wearing red bandanas, etc).[MR]
Strait Jacket
- Get Out / Sure Thing // Close 7" Bat Cat, 1982 NS
Cool garagey/punky obscurity. Vocals sound like they were sped
up giving this a particularly odd sound. [BD]
Strand Fullerton
- Just Like You Lonely / Search & Destroy 7" Strand SE-11-77, 1977 PS
Streamers San Diego
- Future Shock 7" Lub-Dub ST-001, 1981 PS

Shot The Devil / Subliminal / Won't Fall In Love Today / Institutionalized
// Memories Of Tomorrow / Possessed / I Saw Your Mommy ... / Fascist Pig /
I Want More / Suicidal Failure)
Possibly the most commercially successful hardcore record ever made and
while a fast hardcore record overall the guitar work betrays their
later forays into the land of full blown metal. A great record if you
can handle dashes of metal in your punk a la China White.[Brian GTA]
Superheroines
- Cry For Help LP Bemisbrain 131, 1983
- Souls That Save 12" Bemisbrain E1057, 1983
(Take A Trip / Stripped Of My Love / A War To Fight / Levels Of Rage //
Seven Years / Life Goes On / Boneyard Sky / B.T. Lie)
Cry For Help is very metal laden death punk with vocalist Eva O's
signature eerie cries. Souls That Save is even more metal than
the first. Along with the first Christian Death lp, both Super
Heroines LPs stand out as some of death rock's finer moments.[Brian GTA]
Symbol Six
- Ego / Symbol Six // Taxation / Beverlywood 12" Posh Boy PBS1030, 1982
Good recording, great guitar riffs and instantly memorable songwriting
right up there with the Adolescents, Channel 3 and the Cheifs. The real
crime is that this is an EP and not an LP.[Brian GTA]

Undercover Los Angeles
- God Rules LP A&S 0005, 1983
Full blown bible thumping here; and while there were other bands with
christian influences playing punk that sang about a variety of topics,
these guys did not. [Brian GTA]
